We are moving again. The new location will be a block away. We meet the second Tuesday monthly from 7-9 PM at the Community College of Philadelphia, Rm. Dr. Margaret Flowers is a nationally recognized health care activist who supports single payer, national health insurance. Dr. Flowers is one of the Baucus 8 who disrupted the Senate Finance Committee hearing during the creation of the Obama health plan because they failed to consider single payer as an option. She has spoken on PBS’s Bill Moyers Journal, Democracy NOW and numerous progressive health events. Currently, she has organized NOW DC, which supports people power to create a sustainable planet and to change the corporate influence on our politics.

A Memorial Lecture for Harold Cohen & Ann Weir. Harold Cohen and Ann Weir were long time members of Health Care for All Philadelphia and ardent supporters of single payer health care. They passed away in 2011.

We believe healthcare is a human right. Our health and well-being should not be controlled by for-profit Wall Street corporations and their moguls. Healthcare should be nonprofit, comprehensive, and cover everyone from birth to death.

Instead, 50 million people are uninsured and 30 million are under-insured. 45,000 people die each year from lack of access to healthcare. Most bankruptcies are due to medical bills/illness.

This is unacceptable! Lets make it known at City Hall this Tuesday!

On December 6, we decided to attend the Paul Farmer lecture at the main library in place of our steering committee meeting. He’ll speak about Haiti Post Earthquake.

Dr. Bill Hsiao came to Philly to speak about single payer in Vermont, but also share some of his life experience shaping the health systems in nine countries!! He was a humble speaker given his unique background and spoke with both wisdom and humor. One consistent theme though was that in analyzing all of the health systems and best practices, single payer consistently comes out on top. We were fortunate to have him come.
